I absolutely love this story! It is one of the main reasons I decided to make the switch from writing political commentary to searching out good news to share every day. The full details are available on the Today.com website if you want to get a little extra info.
In the picture below is Iris, an eight-year old Great Dane who, sadly, developed a tumor that was inoperable and was causing her to have difficulty breathing. Her family made the difficult decision to have her put down — and that’s a decision that hurts your heart!
Hunter Metzger, Iris’ owner and dad to his family, said, “Everybody loves their pets, and if you ever have to make that tough decision, you want them to be able to go down with some semblance of dignity, you know what I mean?” The family wanted to do something special for her, so they ordered a last meal for Iris from their local Texas Roadhouse restaurant: an 8-ounce thick-cut New York strip steak (rare), steak fries, mashed potatoes, and freshly baked bread.
“I put in an online order, and they have a special request field, and we were all up in our feels getting ready to say goodbye to our dog,” Metzger says. He wrote, “Last meal for our dog. Please prepare with love,” and submitted the order.
Boy, oh boy, did the crew at Texas Roadhouse deliver on that request! The to-go team showed the request to their manager, Kate Weston, an animal lover with a dog of her own. Weston said, “I was like, ‘Oh my god, we need to make sure that this is the best meal we’ve ever made.’” The crew wrote a sympathy note on the order, and labeled it, “MADE WITH LOVE”.
Iris, of course, ate it up gladly, spent her final moments surrounded by family and friends, and crossed the Rainbow Bridge with a full tummy and a happy heart. Weston, the TR manager, summed it up so very well:
“I just hope that it shows people that a little bit of kindness can go a long way,” Weston says. “The world feels like such an ugly place right now, and showing that love and compassion can definitely help someone and make what could be a really bad day into something amazing.”
I’m not crying — you’re crying! Way to go, Iris, the Metzger family, and the Texas Roadhouse crew! In case you’re wondering, the restaurant topped it all off by refunding the price of the dinner to the Metzgers. Class all the way!
